Notes
Serum tumor marker (MUC1 epitope) used for breast cancer follow-up; ASCO and NCCN do NOT recommend CA 15-3 for screening of asymptomatic individuals (insufficient sensitivity/specificity, no mortality benefit shown). Limited role in surveillance after curative-intent treatment of early-stage breast cancer — most guidelines (ASCO 2013, NCCN 2025) advise against routine serial measurement in non-metastatic survivors. Primary utility: response monitoring in established metastatic disease (rising trend may precede imaging progression by weeks to months). Can be falsely elevated in benign breast disease, liver disease, ovarian cancer, and some lung cancers. STUB pending two-Co-Lead signoff.
